Spirit of Enniskillen international programmeCheers

Since 1989 nearly one hundred Spirit of Enniskillen project groupings have been hosted in many overseas regions including North and South Cyprus; Croatia and Bosnia; Israel and Palestine; South Africa; the Basque Country and Spain; Belgium; Canada; France; Germany; Mexico; Sweden; Latvia; Romania and the USA. In return each year the Trust hosts exchange groupings of overseas young visitors adding a richness and a new perspective to the issues of Northern Ireland.

Inter-cultural learning

In a fractured but ultimately interdependent world, the informal learning of young people takes on an extra impetus when it takes place within the context of overseas regions where misunderstanding and prejudice are also hindrances to an open, equitable and pluralist society.

Done well, discussion within this environment encourages exploration of the differing norms and values of everyone, without diluting the personal identity of anyone. To the contrary, our experience on the Spirit of Enniskillen is that it is only through a real understanding and awareness of others who are different that we can also find a true respect for ourselves.

This new climate encourages openness and energy in exploring alternative ideas and in looking at familiar issues through fresh perspectives, critically important when, in discussions between those of differing traditions, it is the norm to avoid the issues that are seen as divisive and contentious.

Young people on the Spirit of Enniskillen have consistently been envoys internationally in highlighting the efforts in Northern Ireland to move towards a political and social dispensation where all can feel valued and respected and no one feels left behind

There have been many occasions overseas where participants have made powerful impressions through their integrity and their sensitivity in confronting the difficult issues that divide them, and in their genuine desire to find a way forward for all.
